Unit: Genetics
Lesson #1

Title: Genetics: Why Do I Look the Way I Do?
Lesson Overview
During the lesson, the unit will be previewed briefly and the students will gain a knowledge of how mitosis and meiosis works, and they will draw out the steps to each process in groups.
Objectives
1. Students will be able to draw the steps of mitosis and meiosis.
2. Students will be able to describe define genetics with some general understanding of traits.
3. Students will be able to explain why mitosis and meiosis takes place.

Instruction
Opening
I will start the class by asking for a volunteer to stand in the front of the room. I will then direct the rest of the class to stand up. One by one, I will list off traits of the student in the front of the room. If a student standing does not have one of these traits, they will sit down until there is just one person left. I will make a little joke and say that these two students are the most alike in the class. When all the students sit down I will ask the students if they know what the characteristics I was naming out were called. Then I will ask where they get these traits from. I will finally ask what this is called and then will get into my brief introduction. (10 minutes)
Learning Activities
I will start with a power point on genetics. Introducing the topic and going over some general definitions. (20-30 min)

Next, I will tell the students that we are going to start learning about mitosis and meiosis and ask them to break up into groups of 4. I will have half of the groups draw the steps to mitosis and half of the groups draw the steps of meiosis. Each person in the group will be responsible for one phase. (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telephase) They are able to use the textbook or laptops for assistance. The webstie above will be given for an interactive display of mitosis and meiosis. After each phase is drawn and cut out the groups will arrange the phases in order on a large poster board and they will be hung up in the front of the room. (30 min)
Closing
Students will be asked to reassemble to their desks. I will hand out a sheet of notes explaining the roles of mitosis and meiosis with the steps drawn out. I will ask them to complete a worksheet for homework using the notes handout and the textbook.
Assessment
The posters will be collected and graded for accuracy. The homework will also be reviewed the next class.
Homework
Students will finish the worksheet for homework on mitosis and meiosis.
